Sometimes the Dharma seems complicated. Sometimes we have trouble making it relevant to what is going on in the moment. Sometimes we have difficulty maintaining our practice in the face of overwhelming challenges. All of these ‘sometimes’ are none other than the mind making the Dharma more complicated than it is. So, here are some suggestions:

  • Exercise, get fresh air and sunshine, and eat nutritious food.
  • Make an altar to reflect what you love. A flower, a candle, an inspiring statue or picture—make it beautiful and in a place where you want to sit and reflect.
  • Be consistent. Make sure you have a ‘go to’ practice you always do no matter what. Keep it simple and memorized so you can accomplish it anytime, anywhere.
  • When the mind begins to repeat unhelpful things, focus on your practice—perhaps a mantra and visualization that benefits all beings.
  • Study, reflect, and meditate upon a favorite sacred text. It should be dog-eared and in need of a new binding.
  • Remember the true nature of your mind is unaffected by afflictive emotions.
  • Aspire to realize the true nature of your mind—the effortless union of wisdom and compassion.
  • On an ultimate level, there is nothing to do and nowhere to go…
  • …but when you do and go, make sure it is dedicated to the benefit of all beings.
  • Practice, practice, practice…
