About Us

The Natural Mind Dharma Center is a non-profit organization dedicated to offering the teachings and practices of the Nyingma tradition of Vajrayana Buddhism.

Padmasambhava

Our lineage is traced to Padmasambhava, an eighth century master of Tantra and Dzogchen. He, along with King Trisong Deutsen and Scholar Shankarashita, established the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet at Samye. Under Padmasambhava's guidance, the Dharma blossomed into a magical display of wisdom and compassion.

Lady Yeshe Tsogyal

One of Padmasambhava's closest students, Lady Yeshe Tsogyal, recorded and transmitted much of what he taught. She also helped to preserve the teachings for future generations. Yeshe Tsogyal went on to become a great healer and spiritual mentor to many.

The Khenpos

Our living lineage masters are Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche and his brother, Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche (informally, the "Khenpos"), founders of the Padmasambhava Buddhist Centers around the world. They are masters of meditation and hold an honored place in the Nyingma lineage of Tibetan Buddhist teachers.

Michael Scott Stevens

Founder/Director of the Dharma center, Michael has a degree in Religious Studies and an extensive background in psychology, yoga, meditation, and nature studies. He established the first Yoga center in Bend and the Natural Mind Dharma Center is the first Buddhist center in Central Oregon.

In addition to guiding practices at the center, Michael teaches classes on foundational Buddhist studies and meditation through Central Oregon Community College, the Bend-LaPine School District, Hospice, and many other venues.

Michael's dream is to create a retreat center dedicated to the Nyingma lineage that provides support for dharma practitioners of all traditions.

Local Programs and Events

Weekly Meditation: We gather to chant and silently meditate in the style of a long lineage of sincere Dharma practitioners.

Dharma Talks: Our resident teacher, Michael Stevens, offers insight into the Buddhist Dharma drawing on years of practice and personal experience.

Visiting Lamas: We receive formal instruction and empowerments from our root teachers and lineage holders when their schedule permits.

Foundations of Buddhism This 6 week class introduces the Buddha Dharma and provides a foundation for meditation practice. The class is taught through the center and/or Central Oregon Community College.

Community Service We have created programs for a variety of organizations including St. Charles Hospital, Spiritual Awareness Center, Bend-LaPine Schools, Sacred Art of the Living Center and Central Oregon Community College. If you have an interest in sponsoring an event in your area please contact the center.

Whatever objects appear are like mirrors reflecting the ultimate. Whatever states of consciousness arise naturally dissolve as soon as they are recognized. This is the play of Dharmakaya (universal truth). Like water and waves, they are one continuum in the Dharmakaya. This is the significance of the ultimate meaning, the very summit of views, the Great Completion, Dzogchen.

In short, however you practice, the most important parts are the natural dissolution of ego- grasping and the purification of delusions in the sphere of the Dharmakaya. Whoever is skilled in this practice achieves what is called the removal of confusion while on the path.
